Dear Adrienne: Karma and Isn't Life Supposed to Be Easy When It's Done Right?

I was working with a client the other day and the following conversation ensued. Why do we think that spirituality, our path that we walk, and our career(s) we choose are supposed to feel easy, go smoothly, make us happy, and be exciting— evoking some sort of passion? Why, when they don’t, do we assume we are doing it wrong and somehow wrong choices were made? This goes double for the people involved in some sort of spiritual service work. I mean it’s shocking, right? I know. To even suggest that our lives do indeed have struggle, lack of joy, depression, and grief woven into them is a marker that we are “lacking” in some minds. Especially in spiritual communities where there exists a belief that “struggle” equals “wrong”. Yes, I know you’ve been taught that this unfathomable situation equates with a low level of “support of nature” and sure, a T-shirt will be issued for you to wear, should you make this a public proclamation. Available in size XS-XXL (unisex), 100 percent organic polyester (to keep costs down), it will say on the front: “Judge Me”. and on the back in bold: “Un-Enlightened Cuz My Life is Tough”. Some even flippantly throw out “it’s your karma”.

So the question to you is: do you believe that a life that is hard, one that lacks sparkle, passion, and is bringing you no joy, or has deep struggle involved, is wrong?  Or going a step further.. are you wrong?

“Well”, you fake sadly say, “that’s your karma” and then you continue “you know, I don’t really want to say it, but uh you’re lesser evolved so blessings to you and better luck next life?”
